◆ Joint venture agreement signed with U.S. startup Amogy to develop the “carbon-free distributed power generation” market◆ Demonstration project planned in Pohang’s distributed energy special zone using green ammonia… with plans to expand into commercial-scale plants◆ Aiming to lead the carbon-free power generation market and pioneer alternative energy sources to replace fossil fuels GS Engineering & Construction (GS E&C) announced on the 10th that it has signed a Joint Venture (JV) agreement with U.S. startup Amogy to jointly pursue an ammonia-based distributed power generation business. The JV agreement was established to enable entry into the carbon-free distributed power generation market by combining GS E&C’s extensive EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) capabilities across domestic and international plant projects with Amogy’s proprietary technology. Amogy is a U.S.-based startup that possesses world-class technology for converting ammonia into hydrogen and provides ammonia-based power generation solutions. The “carbon-free distributed power generation” model being developed by the two companies utilizes green ammonia to generate electricity without complex infrastructure, enabling power generation even on limited land areas. This approach is expected to offer both cost efficiency and spatial advantages. At the end of last year, the two companies were jointly selected as project operators for a distributed energy special zone designated by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Following this JV agreement, they are in the process of establishing a separate joint venture entity. In addition, they are preparing to launch a 1MW-scale demonstration power plant within the distributed energy special zone located in the Yeongilman Industrial Complex in Pohang. The project, targeted to commence construction within this year in collaboration with Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Pohang City, will produce electricity using green ammonia as fuel without carbon emissions. This model is expected to simultaneously achieve carbon reduction while embodying the core principle of “local production for local consumption.” Based on the Pohang demonstration project conducted in partnership with Amogy, GS E&C plans to scale up the capacity to as much as 40MW and operate commercial plants targeting companies within industrial complexes that require greenhouse gas reduction, while actively expanding into the global carbon-free distributed power generation market. A GS E&C official stated, “Through this joint venture agreement, we aim to lead a new market for green ammonia-based carbon-free power generation. By successfully executing demonstration and commercialization projects in Pohang, we will establish a strong foundation for expanding our energy business portfolio.”
