GS E&C was awarded the contract for the "New Selander Bridge Construction Project" in Tanzania.GS E&C announced on the 24th, that it has signed a contract with Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) for the US$ 107 million "New Selander Bridge Construction Project" on the 23rd, during a ceremony in the Presidential Palace that was attended by , Dr John Magufuli, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mr. Nak-yeon Lee, Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, Eng. Patrick A.L Mfugale, Chief Executive of TANROADS, and Mr. Jee-hoon Kim, General Manager for the GS E&C Dubai Branch Office.Of the approximately US$ 107 million project cost of the project, US$ 91 million is being financed by the Korean Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF).This project is a bridge and road construction project to solve the traffic congestion between the Msasani district of Dar es Salam, the economic and industrial center of Tanzania, and the CBD (Central Business District). The project will attempt to relieve the traffic bottleneck by connecting the area near Coco Beach and Agakan Hospital in Dar es Salaam with a four-lane bridge (1km) on the sea. Construction is scheduled to start in the latter half of the year for completion in 2021. From the total length of 6.23km, the length of the new bridge is 1.03km. The main bridge itself is 670m long and is designed as an extradosed bridge with a maximum span of 125m. The road consists of a 4.52km section where two lanes has been expanded to four lanes and a new 0.68km section. In 2016, GS E&C has completed construction of 132kV transmission line between Kilimanjaro and Arusha and the expansion of four 204kV substation in Tanzania. As shown by the contract award and execution of the Kais Combined Cycle Power Plant(CCPP) Project in Algeria, the ERC Refinery Project in Egypt, and the Kumasi 330kV Transmission Project in Ghana, it is involved in the African construction market.Mr. Sahng-ki Lee, Senior Executive Vice President for Infra stated " Starting with the Tanzanian infrastructure business, we will continue to expand our business in Africa by exploring a wide range of business opportunities from financed projects to projects that require financing.”(Glossary)* The Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF)In order to support industrialization and economic development in developing countries and to promote economic exchanges between Korea and developing countries, the Korea Export-Import Bank has been entrusted by the Korean Government with management of a fund established in 1987.* Extradosed BridgeA new type of bridge with composite characteristics that combines the merits of girder and cable-stayed bridges. It is lightweight and the span can be made longer than girder bridges. Compared to cable-stayed bridges, it can reduce stress fluctuations and the height of the pylon, which results in excellent constructability and economics for spans ranging from 100 to 200 meters. This method solves the problem of the load on the foundation and load deformation on the pylon and cable resulting from the increase of pylon height.
